Gut health – a growing consumer trend anchored in new understandings of the microbiome of humans and animals

There is something the clear majority of us can agree on – food often comes along with the pleasure to share a privileged moment with family or friends, whether at home or outside in a park or in a restaurant.
Nevertheless, today, eating is not only viewed as a way to spend pleasant moments with family or friends. It has become increasingly considered as the most important factor in human health. Today’s consumers are paying strong attention to the quality of the products they are eating, whether it’s about the nutritional value, or if the production and supply chain are respectful to the environment, or the degree of transformation (see the very interesting works of Carlos Monteiro).
This is leading to important and numerous consumers trends such as vegetarianism or flexitarianism or paleolithic diets, which is giving no other choice to the food industry but to adapt to what people are now expecting.
A major trend
But there is one other major trend – once only reserved to the specialized scientists – which has been recently growing in importance for consumers: taking care of our own gut health and the microbiome associated with it (the microbiome simply means all the microorganisms in a particular environment, including the body or a part of the body).
Scientific research has proved that gut health is dependent on the variety and the number of positive microbes (bacteria) that are present in it. But why is it considered to be so important?
Many studies, now widely shared among consumers, have shown that lives in our digestive systems might be as complex and influential as our genes in everything from mental health to athleticism and obesity. It’s also proven that gut health constitute an important barrier for diseases, like many scientific studies have pointed out (an example: https://www.nature.com/articles/ctg201654).
As a logical consequence, more and more people are paying attention to their food intake to increase the presence of “positive” bacteria living in their gut. It results in growing sales for fermented food and drinks (Kombucha, Kefir, …) reputed for being hosts of microorganisms that can positively affect health. Probiotics, which are basically a cocktail of positive bacteria, are also more and present in people’s diet, generally taken as a food supplement in the form of a pill.
Microbiome Gut Health – not only for humans
But humans are not the only animals whom health can be affected by their food consumption. Animals in livestock farming can also immensely benefit from better diets leading to better microbiome gut health. We can imagine that it could improve their immune system and their overall wellbeing, also leading to productivity increases and better quality products (as for instance less antibiotics would be used). No need to say the feed industry is paying strong attention to the research in that field.
